Miss Suzy Receives Great Honor

My friend, Suzy Lovejoy, recently received a great honor. Read on.....

Lanier Middle School Teacher Receives State Recognition
January 30, 2008

Suzy Lovejoy, an English-literacy teacher at Sidney Lanier Middle School, was the 2008 recipient of the Outstanding Middle School Educator Award from the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA). The award was presented to Lovejoy on January 26 at the TCTELA annual conference in Houston, where she was recognized for inspiring students to read and write through a unique community approach to language arts.
Throughout her career, Lovejoy has taught students to go beyond ordinary writing techniques; she has helped students become better writers by inspiring them to explore how they feel about various issues in the community.
Her unique style of teaching began at River Oaks Elementary School in 1990, when the school was under renovation. Lovejoy seized the opportunity to turn the fifth-grade classroom into a lab for investigative journalism. Students researched not only the renovation project, but how bricks were made. They interviewed construction workers and school administrators, and then wrote a book about the renovation project that included a history of the school.
“Students are inspired to write when something meaningful happens to them, so I’ve tried to put them in situations that have a purpose or a cause,” Lovejoy said. “When students get involved with a cause, they’re moved to articulate their feelings.”
Lovejoy received the Outstanding Middle School Educator Award from the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts for inspiring students to read and write through a unique community approach to language arts.
One class of fifth-graders chose to study the problems of homelessness in Houston and then wrote a play based on their research. Another class studied HIV and AIDS, wrote a book about their findings, and presented the publication to the AIDS Foundation Houston.
This year, at Lanier Middle School, sixth-graders are studying the ecological environment in the community around their school. Assistant Principal Lauren Askew said she is often invited to be the audience for Lovejoy’s students when they perform original plays or share their creative writing. “Ms. Lovejoy’s classroom is a place where meaningful learning is coupled with fun, confidence-building activities,” Askew said. “Ms. Lovejoy also invites guest speakers to read their published poems or short stories to her students and to talk about the writing process. Overall, Ms. Lovejoy encourages students to expand their worlds and fulfill their creative genius.”
Dr. Margaret Hill, a retired language arts professor at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, nominated Lovejoy for the award. “Ms. Lovejoy comes as close to embodying Paulo Freire’s philosophy of ‘Teaching the World’ as one can get. Her students leave each year with a deep understanding of human rights, struggles, and accomplishments and become excellent writers, readers, and thinkers.”
A life-long learner, Lovejoy often travels to New York to take courses at Teachers College, Columbia University, to which she credits the innovative ideas she brings into the classroom. Lovejoy holds a Master of Liberal Arts degree from the University of St. Thomas and a Master of Education for Gifted and Talented Students from the University of Houston. In addition to teaching at Lanier, Lovejoy serves as a language arts adjunct instructor at the University of Houston–Clear Lake. She is an accomplished writer of short stories and poetry with six publishing credits.
TCTELA Past President Alana Morris said the unique community approach to language arts developed by Lovejoy was the determining factor in naming her the Outstanding Middle School Educator in English Language Arts.

Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Group Wins!!!

Meet Miss Lilly, my mother's baby Cairn terrier I took in when Mom died in a car wreck. I had four I took in at that time. They needed a mama and I figured my mama would like that.

Hi Kay, 1/5/08

I just posted this to my local Houston rescue list. I want to thank you so much for sharing with your readers and friends. I am certain you all made the difference in Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network winning the Yahoo Charity Contest!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!
This just in from my cairn rescue group:
"Yahoo! just called, and said in part .....
There were enough duplicate donations for the other organization that it turns out that Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network had the most unique donations. We need to finalize the numbers, but it looks like we'll be matching the total amount donated to your organization of $19,784. Congratulations!"
http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/cybergiving2007/ This shows the total donations at contest end, and as we had more than one donation from some of the same people as well, the amount matched by Yahoo will be only those unique donations (hence the lesser $ amount). Whewwww, took them long enough to let us know! I guess the other group didn't read the rules as they must have had a very large number of duplicate donations (total donations, not total unique donations, were 1053 for us vs. 1820 for them).
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED!!!!!!!!!!!!! We could not have done it without you!!! I don't know what the final "unique donation" numbers are for us or them, or how close a contest it really was, but apparently we had more of the unique donations.
I'm still in disbelief... Of course, now I'm waiting to hear an "oops".... This is just so hard to believe - I was sure we had lost. Thank you all so much!!!
Please share this good news wherever you cross posted or whoever you told about it. I want everyone to know what a difference their donation made!!!! I have no doubt that in addition to the cairns that these funds will help, that all animal rescues will be noted as a force to be reckoned with. My biggest wish is that in some way, more people will be made aware of how important rescue groups are. I know Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network will give credit to the many people and rescue groups outside of our organization who donated, and for the wonderful good they do for so many helpless animals. It was not just Col. Potter that won, the animals we all rescue, whether by independents or organized rescue groups, have also won this day.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!

This was my response to her:

Dear Sandy,

I cannot tell you how delighted I am about all of this. I think if we let life unfold, we find out why we get hooked up with certain situations, organizations, and/or people. I met you through Freecycle, which I don't even subscribe to anymore. I met you, and re-met a friend who suggested the job I've had for over a year at the Appraisal District, which is changed my life in many ways.
I gave an old computer to a new older man friend some years ago. When he recently died suddenly, his partner gave me Bill's year old computer and said, "You did so much for Bill, including giving him that first computer and helping him learn it all." So, he gave me a computer worth about $500 at least. I never expected any of that. What comes around really does go around.
The other day I had an extra coupon at Bed-Bath-and-Beyond, which I was not using. The women in front of me had over $1000 worth of linens and bath stuff. I handed them the coupon as the checker said, "Too bad you don't have a coupon." I had one for me, I was only buying one item, and it made sense to give them that other coupon. Turns out it saved them almost $200. Talk about happy.
So, to help your group with the contest made sense to me. All of this explains why I believe we all should get out of ourselves and do what we can. It's people like you who are on the front lines, and we can't all do that. But we can help you do that.
