Meet Miss Lilly, my mother's baby Cairn terrier I took in when Mom died in a car wreck. I had four I took in at that time. They needed a mama and I figured my mama would like that.
Hi Kay, 1/5/08
I just posted this to my local Houston rescue list. I want to thank you so much for sharing with your readers and friends. I am certain you all made the difference in Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network winning the Yahoo Charity Contest!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!
This just in from my cairn rescue group:
"Yahoo! just called, and said in part .....
There were enough duplicate donations for the other organization that it turns out that Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network had the most unique donations. We need to finalize the numbers, but it looks like we'll be matching the total amount donated to your organization of $19,784. Congratulations!"
http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/cybergiving2007/ This shows the total donations at contest end, and as we had more than one donation from some of the same people as well, the amount matched by Yahoo will be only those unique donations (hence the lesser $ amount). Whewwww, took them long enough to let us know! I guess the other group didn't read the rules as they must have had a very large number of duplicate donations (total donations, not total unique donations, were 1053 for us vs. 1820 for them).
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED!!!!!!!!!!!!! We could not have done it without you!!! I don't know what the final "unique donation" numbers are for us or them, or how close a contest it really was, but apparently we had more of the unique donations.
I'm still in disbelief... Of course, now I'm waiting to hear an "oops".... This is just so hard to believe - I was sure we had lost. Thank you all so much!!!
Please share this good news wherever you cross posted or whoever you told about it. I want everyone to know what a difference their donation made!!!! I have no doubt that in addition to the cairns that these funds will help, that all animal rescues will be noted as a force to be reckoned with. My biggest wish is that in some way, more people will be made aware of how important rescue groups are. I know Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network will give credit to the many people and rescue groups outside of our organization who donated, and for the wonderful good they do for so many helpless animals. It was not just Col. Potter that won, the animals we all rescue, whether by independents or organized rescue groups, have also won this day.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!

This was my response to her:
Dear Sandy,
I cannot tell you how delighted I am about all of this. I think if we let life unfold, we find out why we get hooked up with certain situations, organizations, and/or people. I met you through Freecycle, which I don't even subscribe to anymore. I met you, and re-met a friend who suggested the job I've had for over a year at the Appraisal District, which is changed my life in many ways.
I gave an old computer to a new older man friend some years ago. When he recently died suddenly, his partner gave me Bill's year old computer and said, "You did so much for Bill, including giving him that first computer and helping him learn it all." So, he gave me a computer worth about $500 at least. I never expected any of that. What comes around really does go around.
The other day I had an extra coupon at Bed-Bath-and-Beyond, which I was not using. The women in front of me had over $1000 worth of linens and bath stuff. I handed them the coupon as the checker said, "Too bad you don't have a coupon." I had one for me, I was only buying one item, and it made sense to give them that other coupon. Turns out it saved them almost $200. Talk about happy.
So, to help your group with the contest made sense to me. All of this explains why I believe we all should get out of ourselves and do what we can. It's people like you who are on the front lines, and we can't all do that. But we can help you do that.
